As the sun rises and I walk along the way
Over my head, the hijab I wear everyday
Stray eyes widened, stared and gazed
And they think I was forced to become a slave
But listen, brothers and sisters, of my little tale
Of why I chose to wear my veil
They look at me and think 'oppression'
That her parents coerced her by agression
But friends, let me tell you that I am not oppressed
Neither have I been repressed or depressed
Some may see the 'thing' as strange
Because of beliefs gone deranged
But what I have achieve is liberation
For I am no longer jugded for my sex appeal or attraction
What I am judged for are my morals and personality
While still holding true to my piety and dignity
Following the Hijab code fills me with ease
For only Allah do I please
Women adorning too much make-up for their transcient flirts
And putting on tight tube tops and miniskirts
Becoming slaves to fashion that degrade us
Begging for love from men who use us and leave us
Yes, we all have a body, a physical manifestation on Earth
But to cover it with cloth so dearth?
So look in the mirror and then you'll see
Of the tainted innocence and gone purity
Do know that you are a gem so priceless
And that you deserve so much more happiness
The body is a vessel for your mind and intellect
And so becomes your duty to treat it with respect
As such I cloak myself in dresses and veils of mystery
To protect my sexuality from eyes unworthy
Because it is a gift to the man who loves you
And holds you in high esteem to marry you
The hijab calms my fears, soothes my heart
Knowing that we will never part
Thus, brothers and sisters believe what I say
For I am truly happy this way
Now if you see me on the streets with my veil
Do remember of my humble tale
Listen and judge my character as I voice
My reason to wear hijab has only been my choice
What I am now is free
To be happy, to be me
To please Allah, the Almighty.
